Firhouse Melting Pot!!

Firhouse Community College is a real melting pot of cultures with 35 different nationalities in the school. As you can imagine there are many languages heard on the corridors every day. Students come from European countries like Poland, Lithuania, Hungary. They also come from further afield like The Philippines, Malaysia, India, Nigeria, Somalia and even countries like Kuwait and Nepal!

Some international students have been in Ireland for a number of years while others have only been here a few weeks. For those students who have recently arrived and who need help with their English, we have an English Language Department in the school. In the EL Department, students receive classes to help them with reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. They also get help with words they need for other subjects.

We celebrate everyone’s culture during our intercultural festival which is held in March every year. Students created posters about their countries, sang songs and did traditional dances. You can see pictures of last year’s events on the school’s website www.firhousecommunitycollege.ie

Firhouse Community College we could say is a mirror of O’Connell Street in Dublin because so many people from all over the world meet and respect each other.

Christmas in Ireland

Merry Christmas

And

Happy new year

We will go to Mass on Christmas Eve. Then we will spend Christmas day with Family and friends . In the evening we have a party and normally play poker.

MErry Christmas EVERYBODY IN THE SOS…

“Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” to everybody in the SOS project. In our country family is a big part of the holiday. We go to Christmas Mass with our families and then we have dinner with them as well. Ireland’s traditional Christmas dinner consists of turkey, ham, stuffing, roast potatoes, turnips, carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy. Then for dessert we have Christmas pudding, cake and other little Christmas treats. We open our presents very early (5 am) with our close family (these are the presents from Santa Clause). Then after Christmas dinner we open the presents from the other family members such as aunties, uncles, grannies and grandads. That’s basically what we do at Christmas in Ireland.

“Merry Christmas” from Rachel Kedney. Firhouse Community College.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everybody involved in the SOS Comenius project.

In Ireland we celebrate Christmas with our family. Some large families do Kriskindle which is when each person buys a present for one person and that person can’t know who bought it for them. We get off school for nearly 2 weeks for Christmas. We have Christmas dinner which is always turkey and ham with all the trimmings!! For dessert we have Christmas pudding and Christmas cake. Afterwards dinner we pull Christmas crackers which bang and have a little treat inside. Presents are opened very early in the morning, normally when we wake up.

Green School

Green Schools Campaign

Our school has recently formed a Green School committee to try to make our school more eco-friendly! Our campaign started last year and already it has been a huge success! Last week we had a week dedicated to being eco-friendly and to try to get more people interested in our project!

We held class competitions each day and the winning class won prizes! We also gave students hints and tips for being more environmentally friendly! We had a week of activities connected with the environment, and how to reduce electricity, water and landfill waste! We had good fun and at the same time we got to promote our green schools campaign!

As a result people are becoming more eco-friendly and we have lots of new students wanting to join our steering committee.

We have a notice board in our school foyer. We have pictures and recent updates so our students can know what is happening each week.

Each member on our committee must carry out a weekly litter survey, counting litter in certain areas, after each month these results are recorded and then shown to fellow students of the school. We have a waste survey monthly when we count the school’s monthly landfill, sorting it into plastic, paper, compost ands general waste. We then recycle all we can, making our school a cleaner, greener environment!
