MErry Christmas EVERYBODY IN THE SOS…
“Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” to everybody in the SOS project. In our country family is a big part of the holiday. We go to Christmas Mass with our families and then we have dinner with them as well. Ireland’s traditional Christmas dinner consists of turkey, ham, stuffing, roast potatoes, turnips, carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy. Then for dessert we have Christmas pudding, cake and other little Christmas treats. We open our presents very early (5 am) with our close family (these are the presents from Santa Clause). Then after Christmas dinner we open the presents from the other family members such as aunties, uncles, grannies and grandads. That’s basically what we do at Christmas in Ireland.

Green School
Green Schools Campaign
Our school has recently formed a Green School committee to try to make our school more eco-friendly! Our campaign started last year and already it has been a huge success! Last week we had a week dedicated to being eco-friendly and to try to get more people interested in our project!
We held class competitions each day and the winning class won prizes! We also gave students hints and tips for being more environmentally friendly! We had a week of activities connected with the environment, and how to reduce electricity, water and landfill waste! We had good fun and at the same time we got to promote our green schools campaign!
As a result people are becoming more eco-friendly and we have lots of new students wanting to join our steering committee.
We have a notice board in our school foyer. We have pictures and recent updates so our students can know what is happening each week.
Each member on our committee must carry out a weekly litter survey, counting litter in certain areas, after each month these results are recorded and then shown to fellow students of the school. We have a waste survey monthly when we count the school’s monthly landfill, sorting it into plastic, paper, compost ands general waste. We then recycle all we can, making our school a cleaner, greener environment!
Arts Week
ARTS WEEK 30th November- 4th December
The College celebrates the Arts and recognizes the importance of the Arts in education.
Monday 30th November
The transition years (15/16 year olds) in our school attended a play performed by a French Theatre Company. It was a very funny, lively performance all the parts being played by only four actors and some of the students who volunteered to participate.
Thursday 3rd December
In the morning there was a “Ceili” organized for the 1st years (12/13 year olds), this is traditional Irish dancing.
From 2.40-4pm there were workshops for the 6th years (18/19year olds). These workshops included Music, a Dance workshop and a Sculpture workshop.
From 6-8pm some students and teachers met in the city centre for carol singing to raise money for the homeless. They wore Santa hats and sang Christmas songs.
Week 7th Dec-11th December
Arts week continues this week. Lots of activities have been organised.
The 2nd years will be watching a play on the theme of “Bullying”. The choir will perform a Christmas concert for a local primary school.
All of the 2nd years will participate in a series of workshops in yoga, drama, art and music.
5th Years will be doing a Japanese workshop. They will be doing origami and learning some Japanese phrases. On the evening of Tuesday the 8th there will be a Christmas concert in the school followed by a mulled wine reception.
There will also be an annual Christmas party for the children of the staff with Santa as the special guest.
There will be a Big Sing for first years. A local primary school will be joining our school for this event.
On Friday 11th December the film “Snowman” will be shown to all the first years.
